Do not let your another day in paradise be ruined by a sudden tooth or oral health related problem whether you are here on vacation, seasonal resident or live here year around!
While we are all leading busy professional or social lives, having medical or dental emergencies is never a fun experience, especially considering its disruptive nature and tremendous pain and suffering it might be associated with. Think about another factor: those things for some reason tend to always happen over the weekend, on the eve of a major holiday, or when you are on vacation somewhere, away from home. And while most of us are very diligent about visiting our dentists and being on time with our dental checkups with trusted dental hygienists, there is no guarantee that a dental emergency is not going to happen.
Even though for each one of us, the level of intensity of pain, discomfort, function impairment, and other symptoms may be different, various circumstances may lead to a combination of factors which lead us to seek dental help as soon as possible. Below are dental emergency conditions that may possibly lead to either a disease or symptoms that may require immediate relief provided by a competent professional.
Emergency Dentist Visit Causes
Emergency dental caused by undetected or unaddressed tooth decay
Though dental cavities at their initial stage are very unsightly and they make us aware about their presence with certain sensitivity to cold, hot, or even sweet, not all cavities are (forthcoming). Many of them are hidden and develop slowly and silently and we become aware of them when it might already be too late. This is when tooth decay and the bacteria that causes it reach the nerve inside of a tooth while irreversibly infecting it. Such infection is almost always marked by intense pain on the side of the jaw where the affected tooth is located, such pain might be irradiating, throbbing, and spontaneous while also being associated with headache, loss of sleep and loss of chewing function. The intensity of this pain can be so disruptive, that many people seek help at local emergency rooms to get some relief. The symptoms may continue up to several weeks with various pain level and almost always culminate in further spread of infection beyond the affected tooth. A toothache related to nerve inflammation and infection resulting from dental decay is the most leading cause of dental emergencies. In cases like this you may need an emergency dental root canal treatment.
Undetected or unaddressed gum disease and tooth infection
Also known as periodontal disease this is one of the most prevalent oral diseases among the adult population in the United States and can be rightfully considered as one of the leading causes of dental emergencies and unfortunately tooth loss that results from its advanced state. In a nutshell, the periodontal disease is an infection of the tissue that surrounds teeth, holds them in place, and is responsible for its proper functioning. Such infection is the result of bacterial invasion into the crevice located between the tooth and the gum and spreading onto deeper lined bone structure and ligament. Such infection is ordinarily very slow going and takes years to reach its advanced stage unless one has severe and debilitating conditions, such as diabetes. Throughout its course, periodontal disease remains pain-free, but in its developed stage, it may manifest as severe pain in the gums, toothache, lost teeth, and loss of chewing function. In cases like this an urgent gum therapy may need to be administered.
I am from out of town and am not a patient of this practice. I was in extreme pain, my husband called and Dr. Val Daniyar was able to see me the same day. I have an extreme fear of the dentist and on this day I had to have my tooth pulled. I was quite upset!!! The doctor was very informative and reassuring. He pulled my tooth and followed up a week later. Both Dr. Daniyar and his office staff were pleasant and very accommodating.
Cracked tooth syndrome causing a dental emergency
Even though tooth decay is a leading course of destruction of teeth, just like any hard tissue or bone, teeth can crack or even fracture if exposed to a sudden hard pressure, external trauma or blow, or harmful habits such as grinding. We are all familiar with sport traumas or automobile accidents that result in a blow to one’s face or teeth, or those stories that involve accidental biting on a very hard object, but teeth can also crack as a result of normal wear and tear. Remember, we get our second and last set of teeth somewhere between the age of 6 and 12, and those are to last for one’s entire lifetime. Now with lots of us living longer and our teeth being exposed to so many different things, it is not uncommon to see that dental cracks are catching up as a very common reason causing a toothache, and associated dental infection when a tooth crack or fraction results in a bacterial invasion. Such cases may require an emergency root canal or emergency dental crown restoration.
I was pleased that you provided me the tooth care the same day we called. I was concerned that the pain was due to an on going infection and would persist into the weekend. We were visiting relatives in Florida & were not going home to Connecticut until the following week. Thanks.
Dental emergency associated with infections of deeper jaw structures (dental abscess of a jaw)
Even though tooth decay progresses deeper into the nerve, we almost always become aware of it through the pain that takes place. But in some instances, such processes may also be too silent or very subtle to call our attention. In cases like this, the infection of the tooth progresses further into the bone of the jaw structures, and may remain silent for some time while being successfully neutralized by one’s immune response.
However, at any given moment, the balance where the immune system keeps the infection contained, may shift and stronger bacterial invasion follows. This is when we deal with swollen facial structures, significant pain, inability to function, often accompanied by severe headaches, malaise, and even fever. Such conditions are definitely more advanced than a single tooth related nerve inflammation because a spread of infection may become uncontrolled and cause significant problems resulting in generalized infections in worst case scenarios. Such instances validate immediate dental and medical attention with administration of urgent dental emergency treatment such as tooth extraction and prevention of complications.
I needed to get in for an emergency check-up the day after Christmas. I had never gone here before and they were able to accommodate me that same day around my work schedule! They even called me to see if I could come in earlier since they had a cancellation since they knew I was in pain. They were very quick and thorough with my appointment and made me feel very welcome. Their office is beautiful as well and their reception desk is incredibly nice - I would highly recommend making this your dentist of choice!
Growing or impacted wisdom teeth requiring an emergency dentist visit
Even though wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are the most frequently missing teeth that fail to develop in many of us, still large numbers of people suffer due to the fact that those teeth start growing at relatively later times, when there is almost no room left for them to come out. It is especially true about lower third molars, which most often are seen jammed in the corner of a jawbone while exhibiting weird angles at which they grow and develop. Wisdom teeth associated dental emergency conditions may vary from pain, feeling of pressure, headache, and/or associated gum swelling that can be quite painful and sometimes also result in infection. Wisdom teeth related problems contribute to the most challenging dilemmas that dental practitioners face very often.
Since their development and growth may not only contribute to pain, but also to other tooth movement and deformities, ultimately resulting in functional and aesthetic problems. The least frequent cause of dental emergencies than decayed or cracked teeth, third molar related conditions nevertheless remain a considerable reason many patients seek urgent care from dental providers. It is also noteworthy to mention that even if they normally erupted, wisdom teeth are more prone to develop cavities and decay because of their remote positioning and harder ways to reach them for everyday hygiene procedures.
Lost or broken dental restorations requiring a visit to an emergency dentist, Naples
Beside everything that has been covered above, there is a whole other category of dental emergency services that are related to the work that was previously done or may currently be in progress. Luckily, in many instances, such problems are more of a nuisance than a real medical/dental emergency. There are some cases where they can be quite bothersome and do require an immediate attention. Think about a loose, temporary crown that results in major tooth sensitivity or a fractured veneer that makes your smile look so unattractive that you can no longer lead any of your social activities or even an old tooth crown that has fractured and left behind very sharp edges that rip your lips or tongue tissue apart. All of those things need to be addressed urgently.
Even if you take good care of your teeth and are regularly seeing your dentist and hygienist for your annual check ups and cleanings, a dental emergency may arise unexpectedly. Previously placed dental crowns or bridges may come loose or detach completely, older dentures can break, and even seemingly healthy teeth may suddenly start hurting due to a developing crack inside of a tooth when you accidentally bit on a hard pop corn kernel or even a pizza crust. All those things and many more others may need an immediate attention to avoid further worsening and later more expensive treatment.
