My blog entries from 2012 offered good advice that’s remains relevant today – from quick toothache remedies to how our oral health affects the rest of our body and even how dental restorations can fail over time.
Just in case, here are a few ideas about temporary relief from a toothache (remember to follow the link below for more recommendations):
- Rinse your tooth pain away. Have a mouthful of warm water and wash your teeth briskly. If the pain is caused by trapped food somewhere between your teeth, you might have it all out thorough rinsing. If rinsing doesn’t work, try flossing. But make sure to be gentle to your gums to avoid soreness.
- Gargle with salt water. Mix 1 teaspoon of salt straight into a glass of lukewarm water. Hold each mouthful; gargle it around the mouth after which you can spit out.
- Try an ice massage. A massage throughout the painful area may reduce the pain sensation. Try rubbing an ice cube into your V-shaped area in which the bones of thumb and forefinger meet. Tenderly press the ice cube covering the spot for a minimum of 5 minutes.

If your mouth isn’t healthy, it isn’t easy for you to feel good about yourself. Further, problems with your mouth could contribute to problems such as cardiac problems.

Patients need a checkup with their dentist to make sure their current oral health is good. However, your dentist will also let you know if a dental restoration (say a filling or a crown) will need replacement. Crowns and fillings do not always last a lifetime, so don’t be surprised if your dentist says one needs to be replaced. Such prevention will make sure you are not caught in an emergency situation if one fails.
